The beautiful city of Dresden on the River Elbe was known as the Florence of the North on account of its splendid Baroque architecture and immense wealth as the seat of the King of Poland.
The architecture created in Dresden at the time - the Zwinger, the cathedral, the Pillnitz Palace, and of course the utterly stunning Konigstrasse are amongst the finest buildings in Europe, and there are countless other museums and galleries to explore. Among the top attractions of Dresden that you can visit and indeed something that gives illustration to just how stunning the city is, is the priceless treasures on display in the Green Vault - a highlight of a cultural visit to Dresden.
During the Second World War, the allies mercilessly firebombed Dresden, and around 30,000 civilians were killed in the firestorms. Many of the city's most beautiful buildings were razed to the ground, and countless works of art were lost forever. The city was rebuilt in brutal style by a generation of soviet architects garnering Dresden a reputation as an ugly place, but thankfully, the tide of change has flowed through Dresden, and the buildings of the past are being rebuilt to replace the concrete slabs, and old Dresden is showing its face again.
