The commercial capital of Germany - if not the whole of Europe, Frankfurt rivals London as a financial centre, and this modern, lively city in central Germany is one of the main business conference centres in the world.

Frankfurt boasts an unusually cosmopolitan population of around a million people, and has a reputation for being more liberal than most other cities in the country. It is a city that revolves around business, and its stunning skyline and reliance on finance have garnered it the nicknames of Mainhattan (its full name is Frankfurt am Main) and also Bankfurt.

Surprisingly, Frankfurt as a whole spends more money on the arts than any other city, and there are several world-class opera houses and theatres, not to mention a whole raft of galleries and museums to keep you occupied during the day and in the evening.

If listening to classical music and staring at paintings is not your thing, rest assured that there is also plenty of modern entertainment on offer too, including a rich programme of concerts and cinema from all over the world available throughout the year.

Shopping in Frankfurt is excellent, with a number of top class shopping malls that encourage you to spend money quickly and indeed guiltlessly, and there is a throbbing nightlife centred on bars and clubs both in the main city centre, and along the banks of the River Main.
