The capital of the region of Lower Saxony, Hanover is home to more than half a million people, and is one of the most important cultural and historic German cities, and was a member of the mercantile union known as the Hanseatic League.
A popular destination for tourists to visit, Hanover has a great deal to offer both as the location for a short city break, and also as the gateway to the region as the centre of a self drive holiday exploring the hinterland.
Amongst the many architectural gems to see in Hanover, the most notable buildings include the famous Marktkirche - a large church dating from the 14th century that still dominates the skyline; the two city halls - the Altes and Neues Rathauses, a castle that was once the home of the Saxon kings, and of course the famous Gehry tower - a modern building designed by American architect Frank Gehry and considered to be one of his most important commercial works.
Among the many sights to see close to the city are the UNESCO protected historic village of Hildesheim, where there are many medieval buildings including a cathedral and some half timbered houses, and no visitor to Lower Saxony should miss out on the chance to visit the village of Hammeln - where the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin was set.
