With a history dating back over 800 years, Munich the capital and cultural heart of Bavaria is a lovely city with a reputation for friendliness that is often known as "the village of one million people" on account of its unique small town feel.
Unlike many other German cities, Munich was far from levelled during the Second World War, and consequently, many of the original buildings survive around the city centre, and the industrial, modern Munich is largely kept to the outskirts.
Aside from the chance to soak up some serious culture in the many art galleries of Munich where paintings by many top artists are on display, Munich is a place where more visceral pleasures are offered everywhere.
In Munich, food and drink are amongst the main attractions, and there are many beer halls where you can consume gallons of beer and eat several pounds of meat.
Twice a year, the population go even more mental than usual. In the week before Lent, they celebrate Farsching, while in late September; Munich is the home of the legendary Oktoberfest - quite literally the biggest all day drinking session imaginable. Make sure you put on a pair of leather shorts and chomp on a few unfeasibly large sausages to get the most out of your involvement.
